J.D. Powers 'Vehicle Dependability' study says U.S. automakers are closing the gap with imports

GasBuddy Blog -- The long-term dependability of three-year-old models has improved year-over-year, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2013 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.

The study, now in its 24th year, measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles (those that were introduced for the 2010 model year). Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

In 2013, the dependability of models that were new or substantially redesigned for the 2010 model year averages 116 PP100, compared with 133 PP100 for models that were unchanged from the 2009 model-year--also referred to as carryover...

Guess Detroit is taking out the internal combusion engine and installing big rubber bands like the rice-burner's use.

Yes U.S. auto makers are closing the gap with imports but the cost of these vehicles are way to expensive for many struggling consumers such as I.

I agree, I have always driven Toyota, but my colleague just bought a Ford Fusion against my recommendations, and I was floored by the fit and finish. US car makers must be realizing the need to step-up to the foreign competition...and frankly the "foreign" competition isn't so foreign anymore, and visa-versa. For example, we drove a Dodge Caravan for 12 years that was built in Canada...and now drive two "foreign" cars, both built in the good old U.S. of A. Perhaps the boys in Detroit are taking better notes on those shop tours of US-based foreign auto manufacturing plants.

I agree with train rider, Fords are better made & yes they did not need a bail out. They are also from the same state I live at.

Are foreign cars built in the US counted as American made or foreign made?
