Florida backtracks on law requiring Canadians to buy international driver permits

GasBuddy Blog -- A new law went into effect January 1 that has needlessly upset plenty of Canadians who choose to winter in Florida. It's a law that says all visitors with foreign licenses must have an internation driver's permit (IDP)which costs $25, issued by their own country of residence as well as a valid license from home.

In other words, the state of Florida would no longer honor Canadian driver's licenses by themselves; they had to be accompanied by a current IDP. What about Canadians who are already in Florida? What if there's an accident?

It's created a lot of confusion. Many Canadians were caught off-guard by the regulations which also apply to any vehicle, including car and RV rentals. Word of the new law spread earlier this...

IDPs are issued by non-government entity who has no power to authorize anyone to drive anywhere.

You can download a blank from the net, fill it with your info, print it out - and it will be just as valid as the one you get from AAA/CAA.

How does an. IDL ensure that foreign country drivers know our laws? Does paying $25 include passing a wriiten test? Or Road test?

Canada should require an IDP for all Florida residents wanting to drive while on vacation in Canada!

Idk, I have been reading that you have to have the IDP to rent a car, so why take the chance on having your vacation messed up. For $25 better to err on the side of caution I would think. And yeah, just another money-grab!

Florida backtracks on law requiring Canadians to buy international driver permits! International Driver Permits? What applies to US drivers in Canada should apply to Canadians in the US. Take a step back and think about that one again, then insert foot in mouth. Florida could loose a lot of money enforcing this one.
There are many other places that are warm and sunny during the winter, they can go there.
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

I live near the FL border and trust me — Canadians are perfectly fine drivers. It's the native Floridians that are friggin' insane! I've travelled extensively around the US and can say they are easily the #2 worst drivers in the US after Louisiana.
