Congressional Hearings Called For In Hyundai MPG Sticker Scandal

GasBuddy Blog -- Consumer Watchdog today called upon leaders of the House and Senate Commerce committees to hold hearings into the revelation by the EPA that for the first time in American history large numbers of vehicles carried window stickers with false MPG claims.

The nonprofit consumer group wrote the EPA one year ago calling for retesting of the Hyundai Elantra after Hyundai's self-tested MPG estimates were far different than many consumers' experiences. Earlier this month, just prior to the presidential election, the EPA announced it had revised MPG claims and window stickers on many Hyundai and Kia vehicles. This is not the first time in history large #'s of vehicles had misstated mpg - it was only few yrs ago that they changed testing stds in the US (we're still waiting in Canada & ours was/is even more unrealistic) to be more realistic & it made a bigger diff. than those for Hyundai now (1 mpg on most, 2 on others & mini-SUV was 4-5mpg). Also, after finding out major Korean appliance mfgr (LG) had misstated energy star ratings for decade, its no surprise a Korean car maker has taken liberties. By the way, my old Hyundai & my current 2004 commuter Kia still gets closer to the mpg ratings than any of the 'N.A.' branded cars I ever had.

I drive conservatively, so I see 28 MPG, 55% higher than the sticker. The way some people drive, they probably don't even see the sticker rate.

The EPA is supposed to VERIFY those numbers, and it's obvious the Gov't employees are just collecting a pay check and a very fat pension but not doing any work. They should fire 99% of them, and we would all be better off. The 1% left should only enforce the current laws.
