I don't blame Toyota one bit for closing this plant and moving it to Texas.
GM backed out, California is expensive to operate in and Texas is more centrally located.

So does the public get to decide where & when a company builds these days? What happened to the owners having the right to keep the business profitable so presently employed workers could continue to do so. Narrow mindedness!!!

It really is an odd place to place a plant like this. Don't like what's happening, but can't do anything about it. Long ago I found I don't care for either GM or Toyota cars.

While this is just a letter to the editor from Toyota, it would be nice to hear from GM too. Seems like maybe Toyota is taking the high road here.

Costs are always part of the financial equation. Why anyone would want to do business in California is beyond me. Add the US labor costs in and the plant's a looser.

Wow. Surprise, Toyota is closing a plant that is losing money. GM already turned tail and ran, but Toyota is just being cowardly. How dare they not support our workers who have grown to depend on the jobs Toyota offered them. We should force Toyota to keep this factory open. Better still we should force this evil company out of the country, and then let GM or Chrysler take this plant over. I mean they are worker friendly, right?

Sound management sometimes have to make difficult decisions. Better to close 1 plant than go bankrupt like some of the others.

If I understand this issue correctly, Toyota is pulling out of NUMMI for economic reasons fostered by the pull out of GM from the joint venture. It is not reasonable to expect Toyota to continue to absorb the costs that were to be bourne together by GM and Toyota. Toyota may indeed have been producing a lot more product in this plant after the pull out of GM. This may have become the case due to Toyota actively attempting to reduce losses from running the plant on its own. If California is truly interested in keeping the NUMMI operation open, they would be actively searching for a partner for Toyota to replace GM in this joint venture. There are other viable players in this market and it is not reasonable for California to just curse the darkness instead of lighting a candle.
